  4.                              S - PACK 
  5.

  7.    One programme for all your file-packing requirements.   Uses include
  8.  HD-backup, archiving, preparing programmes/data/texts for data transfer or
  9.  distribution on floppies.
  10.  
  11.    Special features are:
  12.  
  13.  o  Unbeatable compression.  Produces smaller backups, archives, packs, than
  14.     ANY other programme, with the possible exception of Meixner's SHRINK, on
  15.     which S-PACK's compression is based.  
  16.  
  17.  o  Produce single or multi-disk packs.
  18.  
  19.  o  Packs can be self-unpacking.
  20.  
  21.  o  Output is in the form of normal files on normal disks.
  22.  
  23.  o  Can transfer files of any size to floppies - such as those multi-megabyte
  24.     animations - and rejoin the sections on unpacking.
  25.  
  26.  o  Single files can be extracted from multi-file packs.
  27.  
  28.  o  Unpacks to ram, harddisk, or floppy.
  29.  
  30.  o  Content index always available.
  31.  
  32.  o  In the event of a disk defect or corruption of a pack there is a REAL
  33.     possibility that the bulk of data can be recovered.

  35.  o  Does not need any special libraries or handlers.
  36.  
  37.  o  Small enough (28K) to be kept in your C directory.

  39.  o  OS1.3, OS2, OS3.

  41.    The price to be paid for these is that S-Pack is slower than some
  42.  dedicated Archivers and HD Backup programmes, and that the facilities
  43.  are relatively scanty.  Some comment on these may be useful.

  45.    FACILITIES.
  46.  
  47.    The facilities included are those that I NEED; facilities that are merely
  48.  a minor convenience are excluded.  I never do partial or incremental backup
  49.  or restore, inclusion of filenotes and the dozens of other options in most
  50.  archivers are of no concern to me - or, I suspect, most people.  If there 
  51.  is an option which YOU find essential please let me know. I will include it
  52.  if it can be done without producing incompatability between versions.

  54.    SPEED.
  55.  
  56.    Comparisons given by programme writers are always highly suspect; the
  57.  most trustworthy figures are those you get when trying out the programme on
  58.  your own setup.  However . . .
  59.  
  60.    A4000/040, backing up a 11Mbyte HD partition to floppy, including a small
  61.  allowance for setting up & changing disks:

  77.    The `restore' speed of LHA should be noted - although one always hopes
  78.   that the backup will never need to be restored!

  80.    The time figure for S-Pack must be qualified in two ways:
  81.  
  82.      When writing normal files to floppies, speed is heavily dependant on
  83.     the "Addbuffers" figure.  In this test I used a figure of 200 but 
  84.     anything over 100 should give reasonable results.

  86.      The compression method used is a fair bit slower than those used by the
  87.     other programmes.  On the A4000 this is not serious, but it will become
  88.     a lot more obvious on slower machines.

  91.   DATA TRANSFER
  92.  
  93.   When preparing a set of files for data transfer, particularly by modem, the
  94.  best packer/archiver is the one that reduces the size of the data the most.
  95.  The self-unpacking capability will remove any worry as to whether the data
  96.  can be unarced or unpacked by a recipient.

  100.    S-Pack has been developed and thoroughly tested on a 4000/040, and checked
  101.  out as far as possible on a 500 (OS1.3) without a hard disk.  It should be OK
  102.  on any other system.  I would however advise that you test it thoroughly on
  103.  YOUR system before committing the critical task of backing-up your harddisk
  104.  to it.

  106.    I have not been able to check whether it will back up to, and recover from
  107.  tape, and would greatly appreciate it if someone with the necessary equipment
  108.  could test it and let me know the result.
